From a Black and White Life to Today’s RealitiesIt all began during those years when we were tenants in the Erman Apartment. What lingers most in my childhood memories are those moments at 3:00 or 4:00 AM when we would sacrifice our sleep to sit in front of the television with my father. The TV was black and white, but for us, Muhammad Ali’s matches were the most colorful events in the world.My father would open his palms and teach me how to box. It was as if the excitement of that ring filled our very room. I will never forget; my heart sank when an opponent in red trunks had Muhammad Ali being counted out on his feet. But that was Ali—he recovered instantly, found his breath during the round break, and returned to the fight, proving his resilience to the entire world.Those days when I would run home from Feyzullah Elementary School, and that bond of boxing I shared with my father, were the purest corners of my childhood.However, life did not continue as innocently as those black-and-white frames. Today, as I sit in the two-story house inherited from my grandfather, I carry very heavy burdens alongside the longing for those days. The tragedies that befell my family, the injustices I have suffered, and the major security threat I feel today have become the toughest struggle of my life.
