MANIFESTO ON URBAN CIVILITY AND RELIGIOUS ETIQUETTE

  1. Faith is Humility, Not a Spectacle
No sacred value can be defended by burning tires, creating noise pollution, or turning it into a show of force. Faith is lived through morality, kindness, and exemplary behavior—not by causing public disturbance.
  2. Public Spaces Cannot Be Occupied
The main arteries of the city, such as the Galata Bridge, are not venues for personal or group “fair-like” events. No organization has the right to restrict a citizen’s freedom of movement, block traffic, or prevent pedestrians from passing.
  3. Human Rights Over All (Respect for the Individual)
On those roads are people with medical emergencies, elderly citizens returning from hospitals, workers trying to reach their jobs, and exhausted individuals heading home. To steal these people’s time and victimize them while shouting “We are all Muslims” is fundamentally incompatible with the most basic human and religious value: the “rights of others” (kul hakkı).
  4. The Proper Venue is the Rally Ground
For those who wish to voice their opinions or faiths collectively, the city has designated official rally areas (such as Maltepe or Yenikapı). To hold innocent citizens hostage by blocking their path instead of using these designated areas is not a pursuit of rights; it is an imposition.
  5. Historical Tragedies Are Not Commercial Tools
Just as historical tragedies like Jale Square in Iran (Black Friday) cannot be used as “campaign” or “advertising” material today, the sensitivities of believers cannot be exploited for “drift” shows that paralyze city traffic.
  6. Supervision and Justice are Essential
Authorities must exercise uncompromising oversight against such “organized rowdiness” that disrupts the peace of the city, disturbs the public, and transforms religious values into mere propaganda tools.
In conclusion: No one’s religion or personal belief is our concern; what concerns us is that these beliefs do not pose an obstacle to the lives of others. The city belongs to all of us, and the roads are for moving, not for stopping.
