PREFACE
This report was prepared to evaluate the STC-FUNNEL-01 concept in two linked roles: first, as a high-temperature solar concentration system; and second, as a receiver-side or funnel-like optical capture architecture for in-atmosphere laser power transfer. The analysis therefore addresses thermal operation in the 400–500 °C range, material and environmental limits, and the performance implications of optical energy transfer under clear-sky conditions at a wavelength of 1070 nm.[pressbooks.senecapolytechnic][sussex.ac][darpa]
ABSTRACT
This report examines the STC-FUNNEL-01 system both as a thermal concentration structure and as an optical energy capture concept for transfer applications. The thermal analysis is based on convective and radiative losses, concentration ratio, acceptance angle, selective coating requirements, and material constraints. The transfer analysis adds a clear-sky atmospheric model at 1070 nm for ground-to-ground and ground-to-drone laser power transmission, using Beer–Lambert propagation, the Kim attenuation model, and engineering stage efficiencies. The results indicate that a stationary PMMA-based funnel or concentrator is not suitable for reliable atmospheric operation in the 400–500 °C range, whereas a vacuum receiver, low-emittance coating, and high-temperature-resistant optical materials improve thermal feasibility. From the optical-transfer perspective, the method becomes more valuable as range increases because it mitigates the losses that grow fastest in the atmosphere, namely pointing error, turbulence-capture degradation, and target-motion sensitivity.[darpa][spectrum.ieee][pv-magazine][opg.optica][mdpi]

1. INTRODUCTION
The STC-FUNNEL-01 concept may be interpreted not only as a solar concentration geometry but also as an optical capture interface for directed energy transfer. In thermal use, its operating limit is determined by incoming flux, convective loss, radiative loss, material stability, and geometric concentration. In optical-transfer use, especially for ground-to-ground or drone-linked power delivery, additional limits arise from atmospheric attenuation, beam drift, turbulence, jitter, and target motion.[darpa][mdpi][large.stanford][dspace.mit][japan-pi]
Because the same funnel-like geometry can be discussed in both heating and transfer contexts, this report integrates these roles into a single technical framework. This allows the funnel to be evaluated both as a high-temperature receiver and as a capture-enhancing component in in-atmosphere optical energy systems.[pv-magazine][mza][darpa]
2. PURPOSE AND SCOPE
The purpose of this report is to assess STC-FUNNEL-01 in both thermal and transfer scenarios. The thermal section addresses feasibility in the 400–500 °C range under atmospheric and vacuum conditions, while the transfer section adds clear-sky ground-to-ground and ground-to-drone laser power transmission at 1070 nm and examines how the same method should be interpreted in relation to beam delivery and receiver capture.[sussex.ac][ias.ieee][darpa]
The scope therefore includes two connected questions. The first is whether the funnel architecture can sustain high temperature under air or vacuum. The second is how the funnel concept can be extended to in-atmosphere optical transfer, where receiver capture and deterministic control become dominant efficiency factors.[spectrum.ieee][mdpi][darpa]
3. METHOD
This report was prepared using a literature-based technical review and a semi-quantitative engineering synthesis. The thermal section evaluates concentration ratio, environmental heat transfer, material thermal endurance, and the role of vacuum insulation and selective coatings. The transfer section applies the Beer–Lambert law together with Kim-model attenuation and combines stage efficiencies to produce comparative clear-sky plug-to-plug results.[opg.optica][ias.ieee][mutah.edu][ethz][ietresearch.onlinelibrary.wiley]
The atmospheric transmission model is expressed as:
T = e^{-\sigma d}
and
\sigma = \left(\frac{3.91}{V}\right) \left(\frac{\lambda}{550}\right)^{-q}
where T is path transmission, \sigma is the attenuation coefficient, d is propagation distance, V is visibility, \lambda is wavelength, and q is the Kim-model exponent.[ietresearch.onlinelibrary.wiley][hal][radioeng]
4. THERMAL ASSESSMENT OF THE FUNNEL
Under atmospheric conditions, a stationary funnel or concentrator with a moderate concentration ratio cannot reliably sustain the 400–500 °C range when convective and radiative losses remain uncontrolled. The equilibrium temperature is set by the balance between absorbed input power and environmental losses, which makes a PMMA-based atmospheric funnel unsuitable for sustained high-temperature operation.[large.stanford][dspace.mit][nudec]
Because PMMA has a glass transition temperature of around 105 °C, it is unsuitable for close coupling to a 400–500 °C receiver region. If the funnel is intended to function as a true high-temperature interface, metal-mirrored surfaces, borosilicate, quartz, or fused silica should be used instead, preferably together with a vacuum-insulated receiver and a low-emittance selective coating.[dspace.mit][nudec][xometry][en.wikipedia]
Thermal performance improves in vacuum because convective losses disappear, although radiation still limits stagnation temperature. For that reason, vacuum-compatible funnel architectures are significantly more feasible for high-temperature service than atmospheric PMMA designs.[dspace.mit]
5. IN-ATMOSPHERE TRANSFER APPLICATIONS
5.1 Scope
This section covers ground-to-ground and ground-to-drone laser power transfer. Turbulence and target motion increase with distance, and low-latency deterministic control directly corrects these losses. For that reason, the method is far more valuable here than in space-to-Earth transmission.[mdpi][japan-pi][darpa]
5.2 Field data
DARPA’s POWER program reported that more than 800 W was delivered for 30 seconds from a laser source 8.6 km away. IEEE Spectrum reported that receiver efficiency at shorter distances was around 20 percent, and pv magazine likewise reported that the receiver achieved 20 percent efficiency at shorter ranges. The comparative calculation below is therefore set up to remain broadly consistent with that short-range benchmark, while keeping the improvement factors explicitly assumption-based.[darpa][spectrum.ieee][pv-magazine]
5.3 Funnel role in transfer
In transfer applications, the funnel should not be interpreted only as a thermal concentrator. It can also be treated as a capture-enhancing optical intake or receiver geometry that helps retain, redirect, and distribute incoming beam energy onto photovoltaic or conversion surfaces within the receiver architecture. This interpretation is consistent with DARPA’s description of a receiver in which the beam enters through an aperture, reflects from a parabolic surface, and is directed onto multiple photovoltaic cells inside the receiver body.[darpa][pv-magazine]
Accordingly, adding the method to the funnel in transfer mode means linking the funnel geometry with precise pointing, fast steering, adaptive stabilization, and receiver-side turbulence capture rather than evaluating it only as a passive optical shape.[mza][laserfocusworld][mdpi]
5.4 Atmospheric transmission model
For a clear-sky case with visibility V = 23 km, wavelength \lambda = 1070 nm, and exponent q = 1.6, the attenuation coefficient is approximately 0.059 per kilometer under the stated model assumptions. This gives approximate path-transmission values of 94 percent at 1 km, 75 percent at 5 km, and 56 percent at 10 km.[mdpi][ietresearch.onlinelibrary.wiley]
5.5 Assumptions
The comparative calculation uses the following assumptions.
- Laser pump timing: 50% without method, 51% with method.
- Pointing and jitter: 85% without method, 95% with method.
- Receiver turbulence capture: from 90% to 96% at 1 km, from 70% to 85% at 5 km, and from 50% to 70% at 10 km.
- Receiver PV conversion with maximum power point tracking and wavelength stability: 40% without method, 42% with method.
- Fixed stages: power supply 95%, optics 95%, output converter 95%.
Overall plug-to-plug efficiency is expressed as:
\eta = \prod_i \eta_i
The control-related assumptions are not published measurements; they are engineering estimates used to show how the relative value of the method scales with distance.[japan-pi][pi-usa][mdpi]
5.6 Results
| Distance | Laser output to electrical, without method | Laser output to electrical, with method | Total plug-to-plug, without method | Total plug-to-plug, with method | Relative gain | Delivered power at 10 kW input, without method | Delivered power at 10 kW input, with method |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 km | 27.4% | 34.3% | 12.4% | 15.8% | +28% | 1,237 W | 1,580 W |
| 5 km | 16.9% | 24.0% | 7.6% | 11.1% | +45% | 761 W | 1,106 W |
| 10 km | 9.0% | 14.8% | 4.1% | 6.8% | +68% | 406 W | 680 W |
These values represent a scenario analysis under clear-sky conditions rather than published test measurements.[spectrum.ieee][pv-magazine][darpa]
5.7 Meaning of the results
The contribution grows with distance because turbulence, beam drift, and target-motion losses also grow with distance. For moving targets such as drones, the method becomes one of the most important factors because increasing latency can cause the beam to miss the receiver. The method cannot overcome severe fog, rain, or dense haze; once visibility collapses, optical transmission can drop to nearly zero over practical ranges.[opg.optica][opg.optica][mdpi][japan-pi][mza][ietresearch.onlinelibrary.wiley][darpa]
The 1 km values in the table are slightly optimistic compared with the roughly 20 percent short-range receiver efficiency reported for DARPA’s program. Real systems may perform closer to the lower end of the table depending on weather, beam quality, receiver acceptance, tracking bandwidth, and thermal derating.[pv-magazine][mdpi][darpa][spectrum.ieee]
6. INTEGRATED FINDINGS FOR FUNNEL AND TRANSFER USE
The funnel concept behaves differently depending on whether it is used for thermal concentration or for optical transfer capture. In thermal use, the main limitations are convective loss, radiative loss, and material endurance. In transfer use, performance depends more strongly on capture stability, atmospheric path quality, and the quality of dynamic beam control.[mdpi][large.stanford][mza][dspace.mit]
This indicates that the funnel should be explicitly added to the transfer framework not merely as a passive shape, but as an integrated receiver subsystem. In that role, the funnel adds value only when matched with active pointing correction, fast steering, and adaptive compensation that keep incoming power coupled to the conversion surfaces.[laserfocusworld][japan-pi][mdpi]
7. DISCUSSION
The combined assessment shows that the STC-FUNNEL-01 architecture cannot be treated as a single-purpose geometry. For high-temperature atmospheric heating, PMMA-based versions remain thermally unsuitable. For transfer applications, however, a funnel-like capture structure may still be highly useful if redesigned as a high-temperature or high-flux optical receiver integrated with stabilization and beam-control subsystems.[nudec][pv-magazine][dspace.mit]
This distinction is important because “adding the method to the funnel” means different things in the two use cases. In thermal mode, it means improving insulation, materials, and radiative performance. In transfer mode, it means improving beam acquisition, maintaining power on target, and increasing the effective coupling of transmitted optical power into the receiver.[mza][darpa][mdpi]
In addition, from a cost-efficiency perspective, placing the system in the upper atmosphere or near the space boundary could theoretically offer lower convective loss and higher thermal efficiency potential, but this advantage comes with very high system cost due to continuous platform-holding requirements, attitude control, transport, maintenance, and power support. The key engineering question is therefore not only maximum theoretical efficiency, but whether the additional efficiency gain justifies the total system complexity and operational cost.[orbitalradar][journals.ametsoc][pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih][astronomy][electronics-cooling]
8. CONCLUSION
When implemented as a stationary PMMA-based funnel, the STC-FUNNEL-01 system does not appear suitable for sustained operation in the 400–500 °C range under atmospheric conditions. Reliable high-temperature operation requires a vacuum receiver, a low-emittance coating, and high-temperature-resistant materials.[large.stanford][nudec][dspace.mit]
When the funnel is also considered in the context of in-atmosphere optical transfer, it should be incorporated directly into the transfer architecture as a receiver-side capture element. Under clear-sky conditions at 1070 nm, the modeled contribution of the method increases with distance because it corrects the losses that become dominant in atmospheric propagation, especially pointing error, turbulence-capture degradation, and motion sensitivity.[japan-pi][darpa][mdpi]
In addition, under the assumption that the system could operate in the very low-density boundary regions of the upper atmosphere, it may be possible to approach the highest theoretical efficiency levels available within the atmosphere because convective losses would be further reduced. In practice, however, this approach should not be treated as a standard deployable solution because of the difficulty of maintaining a fixed platform, the very high operating cost, and the requirement for space- or near-space-class infrastructure. It is better understood as a theoretical upper-bound scenario. Accordingly, the most realistic engineering path, in terms of cost-efficiency balance, is to prioritize ground-based vacuum receiver systems or, at most, more limited stratospheric platform solutions.[journals.ametsoc][pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih][astronomy][electronics-cooling][nature][orbitalradar]
