The primary structures along this corridor that historically functioned de facto as antennas or served as electromagnetic resonators/carriers due to their massive dimensions include:
1. TEK / TEİAŞ High-Voltage Transmission Lines and “PLC” (Power Line Carrier) System
The 154 kV transmission lines descending from the Adatepe ridges via Başıbüyük and Maltepe to the coastal strip and the Dragos/Kartal substations, along with the 40–60 meter tall galvanized steel lattice pylons, were technically utilized directly as antenna systems:
- Power Line Carrier System (PLC – BARS): In the pre-fiber optic era (between 1950 and 1990), TEK (Turkish Electricity Authority) operated the high-voltage conductor lines directly as radio frequency transmission lines and longwave antennas. Massive wave traps and coupling capacitors installed at the entries of phase conductors injected high-frequency RF signals between 40 kHz and 500 kHz directly into the 154 kV lines. Through this method, telephone communication, teleprotection, fault reporting, and telemetry data were transmitted between substations.
- Passive Resonator (Parasitic Antenna) Effect: These massive steel lattice pylons, combined with the steel ground wires running along the top of the high-voltage transmission lines, constituted a massive aerial open-circuit antenna grid. Strong RF waves emitted from the transmitters on opposite Burgazada and Kınalıada induced surface currents on these pylons, causing them to act as passive re-radiators (reflector antennas).
2. Ridges Behind Adatepe: The “Telsizler” (Wireless) Area and State Communication Stations
The area on the ridges of Maltepe (the upper sections of Adatepe, Gülsuyu-Gülensu, and Başıbüyük slopes), known colloquially and in official cadastral/zoning records as “Telsizler” (Wireless), does not bear this name by coincidence:
- Wireless Transceiver Centers: Dominating the Sea of Marmara entirely, these elevated hills were used by the PTT and state institutions since the early Republican era to install coastal radio stations, lighthouse communication links, and military/police wireless repeaters.
- Antenna Fields: Alongside high-voltage lines, guyed tubular steel masts and massive lattice towers were deployed in these areas for longwave and shortwave (HF) communications.
3. PTT / Türk Telekom Dragos – Islands Radio-Link Towers
Rising just southeast of Adatepe, Dragos Hill (elevation 107 meters) and Burgazada Bayraktepe (Isa/Christos Hill – elevation 170 meters) have an unobstructed, direct line-of-sight (LOS) to each other with zero terrestrial obstacles:
- Microwave Dish Antenna Towers: Tall lattice radio-link towers were erected on these hills to establish the telephone, telex, and telegraph backbones linking the Princes’ Islands to the mainland. The massive parabolic dish antennas perched atop these towers were clearly visible from the Adatepe shore and the sea as lattice towers comparable in scale to high-voltage pylons.
4. Burgazada Bayraktepe Infrastructure
On Bayraktepe, the highest point of Burgazada:
- Coastal Safety Radar and VTS Station: Houses the radar tower monitoring vessel traffic in the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara, as well as marine VHF (Channels 16/67) radio relay masts.
- Pirate and Private Broadcaster Era (1990s): Following the boom of private radio and television broadcasting in the 1990s, the ridges of Kınalıada and Burgazada hosted massive lattice transmitter towers equipped with dipole antenna arrays operating at hundreds of kilowatts of transmission power.
5. Princes’ Islands Submarine High-Voltage Cable Landing (Terminal) Pylons
To supply electricity to the Princes’ Islands, specially equipped transition pylons and lightning-protected lattice towers were situated at coastal landfall points where submarine cables from the mainland high-voltage grid (Maltepe/Dragos coastal corridor) transitioned from overhead lines into underground and submarine conduits.
